About KCD:MP

What is KCD:MP?

KCD:MP (KCD Multiplayer) is a free, fan-made multiplayer mod for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. A launcher starts your own copy of the game, you pick a server, and you play in the game's own Bohemia with other people: riding, fighting, roleplaying and talking over proximity voice chat.

It's also a platform, much like FiveM is for GTA V or RedM for Red Dead Redemption 2. Anyone can host a KCD:MP server and decide what happens on it with a game mode: roleplay, PvP arenas, sieges, horse races, anything you can script. Basic RP is our own server, and its game mode ships with the server download, so anyone can use it as a starting point for their own.

Is there a multiplayer mod for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II?

Yes. The base game is single-player, and KCD:MP adds multiplayer to it. It's in open beta and you can play it today: the Basic RP server is online 24/7. Grab the launcher and see for yourself.

Is KCD:MP free?

Yes. KCD:MP, its launcher and its dedicated server are free to download and play, and they'll stay free. You need your own copy of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on Steam.

Is KCD:MP made by Warhorse Studios?

No. KCD:MP is a fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Warhorse Studios or Deep Silver. It runs on your own copy of the game.

Is this for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 or 2?

KCD:MP is for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (KCD2) only.

Is KCD:MP co-op? Can I play the story with friends?

Not story co-op, no. KCD:MP doesn't let you play Henry's campaign together. It's multiplayer on servers: you and your friends join the same server and play in the game's Bohemia together, riding, fighting and roleplaying, in whatever game mode that server runs.

A story mode for several players is possible in theory, but every quest, NPC, cutscene and trigger would have to be scripted for multiple players. We're focusing on the mod itself, but if someone wants to build a story mode, we'll support them as best we can.

Is KCD:MP the same as the other KCD2 multiplayer mods?

No. Other teams are working on multiplayer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and their mods aren't related to KCD:MP. KCD:MP is the one on kcd-mp.com: free, with a public server list, servers anyone can host on Windows or Linux, and game modes written in Lua or C#.

What can I do in multiplayer right now?

It depends on the server. On Basic RP you can roleplay with chat commands, talk with proximity voice chat, ride horses, form parties, and fight other players in melee or with firearms.

What can I do on a server? Can I work, farm or hold land?

That depends on the server's game mode. A KCD:MP game mode can script jobs, farming, factions or territories, but the modes that ship with the server don't have them yet. Basic RP is a starting point for now: you can roleplay in text and voice, change your look, ride and keep your own horse, form parties, fight, and search those you've beaten. More comes with every update.

How many players can join a server?

There's no hard cap. A KCD:MP server takes 32 players by default, and its owner can raise that: some public servers already offer hundreds of slots. We've tested a single server with 500 bots walking around and doing things at the same time.

Are there NPCs?

Not the game's own. The story's characters are removed in multiplayer: they run on the story's scripts and AI, which would do different things on every player's screen.

Servers can add their own NPCs with scripting: guards, merchants, arena opponents or crowds. They walk around and fight back. Basic RP has one so far: a merchant at the spawn who trades through the game's own trade screen.

Can I play as a woman?

Yes, since 0.34.0. On Basic RP you choose when you make your character: the character creator's Body row switches between a man and a woman, each with their own faces, hair and skin tones, and /look opens the creator again later. On other servers it's up to their game mode.

The game has no armour made for women, so a dress stands in for a man's clothes and armour on her, with the same protection; hoods and helmets stay off so her hair and face show. Switching between a man and a woman asks you once to restart the game and join again.

Note: women don't show properly in a game of dice yet. This will be fixed in a coming release.

Getting started

Which version of the game do I need?

KCD:MP needs Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on Steam, at the game build the launcher expects (Steam 1.5.6), and Steam has to be running when you play. The launcher checks the game's version and tells you if it doesn't match.

Only the Steam version works today. The Game Pass (Microsoft Store), Epic and GOG versions each need their own build of KCD:MP, and they may come later. Pirated copies aren't supported and won't be.

Tip: if you buy a cheap key from a third-party shop, make sure it's a Steam key. Some listings sell a Steam account that has the game, not a key.

How do I join?

  1. Download the launcher from kcd-mp.com/download
  2. Unzip it and run it
  3. Pick a server from the list (also on kcd-mp.com/server-list) and hit Join

The launcher checks for updates when it starts and offers to install them, so you don't need to re-download.

How do I play with friends?

Everyone installs KCD:MP and joins the same server. Pick a public one from the server list and meet there, or let one of you host a server: it can stay off the public list, and the others join it by its address in the launcher (the host has to open the server's UDP port). How to host one is in the setup guide.

Does KCD:MP run on Steam Deck, Linux or Mac?

No. The KCD:MP client needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit); Steam Deck, Linux through Proton and Mac aren't supported or tested. The dedicated server is different: it runs on Windows or Linux.

Can I play KCD:MP on PS5 or Xbox?

No. KCD:MP is a PC mod: it needs the Steam version of the game on Windows, and consoles can't run it.

Windows or my antivirus says the download is a virus. Is it safe?

Yes, it's a false positive, and it happens for two reasons: the KCD:MP launcher isn't code-signed yet (a certificate costs a lot), and it's brand new, so Windows SmartScreen and antivirus programs don't know it yet. If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then Run anyway.

We submit every build to VirusTotal to build its reputation, and you can check the zip yourself at virustotal.com. To be sure your file is the one we published, compare its SHA-256 with the one on the download page: in PowerShell, run Get-FileHash followed by the zip's path. Only download KCD:MP from kcd-mp.com; its download buttons fetch the files from the project's GitHub releases page.

Does KCD:MP change my game files or my saves?

No. Nothing is written into the game folder, and your single-player saves are untouched. What happens on a server stays with that server: Basic RP, for instance, keeps your character, what you carry and your horse in its own database, so you're put back where you left off.

How do I change my name?

Type it in the Your name field of the launcher before you join (up to 24 characters; spaces become underscores). On Basic RP your name is your character: a new name starts a new character, and your old one waits for you under its own password.

Can I become a tester?

You already are! There's no sign-up: join any server, and report what you find in the #bugs-and-ideas channel on our Discord.

In the game

What are the controls?

  • Enter: open the chat
  • V (hold): talk. Voice chat is proximity-based, so people nearby hear you. Type /voice vad to switch to voice activation, /voice off to turn it off, /mute <name> to mute someone.
  • Tab: player list
  • G: emote wheel

What are the commands?

They depend on the server's game mode. Type /help in chat to see what the server you're on offers.

Why did I get kicked after crafting or picking something up?

The server's anti-cheat checks where every item comes from. Crafting isn't supported yet, and neither are a few other ways of getting items, so the server treats an item that "appears" that way as cheated and kicks you. Just rejoin: we're fixing these one by one.

The server went down or kicked everyone. What happened?

It's usually a restart for an update. Stay in the game: it reconnects by itself once the server is back (on Basic RP you log in again).

What are the known issues?

A build's known issues are listed in its notes in the changelog, under Known issues. The ones that come up most:

  • The chat, the scoreboard or a server's menus don't react to your keys: close RivaTuner Statistics Server (often installed with MSI Afterburner) while you play
  • A server shows no answer in the launcher although the website lists it: some internet providers don't let their customers reach servers at some large hosting companies, and a VPN gets around it
  • Combat still needs a lot of polish
  • Occasional unfair kicks (see above)
  • Rarely, your character freezes and chat won't open: quit and rejoin

How do I report a bug?

Post it in the #bugs-and-ideas channel on our Discord with what you were doing, and attach your log: press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\KcdMp, press Enter and add client.log to your post. Logs help a lot.

Roleplay, mods and menus

Are there roleplay servers?

Yes. Basic RP, the project's own roleplay server, runs 24/7, and other roleplay servers are on the public server list. The Basic RP game mode ships with the server, so anyone can start a roleplay server of their own.

Is roleplay text-based or voice?

Both, and each server chooses. Basic RP has proximity voice chat (hold V) and text roleplay commands: /me, /ame and /do, plus /s to shout and /b for out-of-character chat. Press G for the emote wheel. A server can switch voice chat off and be text-only.

Can I use my own mods (Steam Workshop or the Mods folder)?

Yes, your game's own mods load as usual. Each server decides which ones it accepts: by default any mod is fine, but a server can allow only a list of mods, or none. If a server turns a mod away, it tells you which one to remove.

Servers can't install mods for you: if a server wants everyone on a mod, you install it yourself.

Note: playing with mods is experimental and hasn't been tested yet, so a mod may cause problems on a server.

Can servers make their own menus and UI?

Yes, already. A server's scripts can draw their own menus inside the game's UI, with text, boxes, the game's own UI elements and keyboard input. That's how Basic RP's login box and character creator are made.

Support for web-based UIs (HTML, CSS and JavaScript, the way FiveM does it) is planned.

Running a server

Can I host my own server?

Yes. The KCD:MP server runs on any Windows or Linux PC or VPS. Download it from kcd-mp.com/download; it comes with four game modes ready to use or change: free roam, a duel arena, Basic RP and a checkpoint run. Setup guides are on docs.kcd-mp.com.

Some game hosting companies already offer KCD:MP servers, if you'd rather rent one than run it yourself.

What does a server need?

A 64-bit Windows or Linux machine with the .NET 10 runtime, and one UDP port open to players (7777 by default). To appear on the public list, the server has to be reachable from the internet; a private one only needs to be reachable by its own players. Basic RP also needs a MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL database for its accounts and characters; the other modes need none. The setup guide walks through it.

Do I need to know scripting?

Not to play: people will host servers you can simply join. To make your own game mode, you write it in Lua or C#, and everything is documented at docs.kcd-mp.com.

Is there moderation or an admin system?

Every server has built-in admin commands (kick, ban, teleport and more), and the server's game mode decides who is an admin. Owners can build their own admin and moderation system on top of that, however they like.
